New powers target illegal tobacco operators in Victoria

The Victorian Government has introduced changes to the Tobacco Act 1987, strengthening enforcement against the sale of illegal tobacco.

Under the new powers, Tobacco Licensing Victoria and Victoria Police can:

  • Enter premises and check compliance
  • Seize illegal tobacco products
  • Issue infringement notices to illicit sellers and landlords
  • Close businesses involved in illegal tobacco sales through short or long-term closure orders

For commercial property owners and landlords, the changes highlight the importance of knowing how premises are being used and ensuring tenants remain compliant.
